HISTORY
HISTORY
The origin of the UTSS dates back to the fall of 2009, and was created in an effort to change the focus, ethics, organization, and culture of taekwondo tournaments in Manitoba. From the very first event in the summer of 2010, the experience was noticeably different from other taekwondo competitions being held in the province.
The practice of centering tournaments around praising dignitaries and directing attention at figure heads was replaced with an emphasis and spotlight on the competitors. UTSS tournaments have and always will be for the athletes! Gone were the decorative head tables, the late starting times, the drawn out opening ceremonies, the large and unfair divisions, and the overwhelming lack of organization leading to considerable delays and frustrations.
These drawbacks were replaced with tournaments that started promptly, conducted brief but meaningful ceremonies, and were eager and energized to get the competition running. Meticulous planning produced the structure and organization that lead to the events running smoothly and efficiently, while a great showing of teamwork and comradery amongst the clubs fostered a friendly but competitive atmosphere.
Through these changes the priority remained the same, the athletes. Much time was devoted to the creation of draws and divisions that offered fairness, safety, and the best chance of producing a positive experience. Referees were certified and coaches were vetted to ensure they could support the competitors best, and the quality and quantity of awards were improved to showcase the results and accomplishments of the athletes.
UTSS tournaments quickly developed a positive reputation and grew in popularity. As more clubs attended and became involved, a refreshing culture was formed. Attendees from Saskatchewan, Northern Ontario, North Dakota, and all over Manitoba contributed and played a further role in the development of UTSS events - continuing to focus on the athletes, while priding itself on respect, trust sportsmanship, fairness and integrity.
The inaugural tournament - Club Challenge Invitational - took place on Saturday, June 12th, 2010 at the Fort Garry Curling Club in Winnipeg. The Club Challenge, now named the Community Challenge, has been held every year since 2010 except for 2020 and 2021 during the pandemic, making it the longest running active taekwondo tournament in Manitoba.
Since this date, the UTSS has created three annually hosted tournaments and managed events for Taekwondo Manitoba.
